If we, as a club or as a country or as all of humanity, stand tall today, it is because we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us... those who fought, struggled, laughed, cried, dreamed and, above all, believed. The men and women whom we recognize at our memorial site in Long's Park knew that their lives counted. That everything they either did or left undone would make a difference in the world. To forget them is to forget everything we stand on and everything we stand for.
It is not their dying that we remember as we visit the site. It is their living. It is all of the goodness that their lives brought to the world. They, as all of us, were not perfect. But when they came to this club, they brought the best they had to offer. We visit the memorial site to do the same. We go to remind ourselves of our commitment to each other to do the best we can to make the world a better place.
